GCPL Launches 'Goodknight Naturals Neem Agarbatti'

03 December 2018

Goodknight, a market leader in the home insecticide category launched, Goodknight Naturals Neem Agarbatti, a 100% natural mosquito repellent agarbatti (incense stick). Goodknight Agarbatti is infused with nature's two most potent natural ingredients - Neem and Turmeric which can repel mosquitoes and provide effective protection.

Goodknight with its mission of protecting each and every citizen from vector-borne diseases across the country, has always offered superior, affordable and safe solutions. With the launch of Goodknight Naturals Neem Agarbatti, the brand is empowering Indians to fight against the menace of mosquitoes with a 100% natural solution.

Sharing his thoughts on the launch, Mr. Sunil Kataria, CEO - India & SAARC, Godrej Consumer Products Limited, said, "Brand Goodknight has always led innovations in the home insecticide space. Be it Goodknight Fast Card, Power Chip or the Fabric Roll-on, we have always disrupted the market with unique formats which are highly effective and safe to use."

He further added, "In a market that has many illegal brands of agarbattis with questionable ingredients, Goodknight Naturals Neem Agarbatti with 100% natural ingredients - Neem and Turmeric will be a very effective and safe solution for all. Priced at INR 15 for 10 sticks that burns for 3 hours each, this is one of the most superior product offerings at an affordable price point."

Present at the launch, Dr. Shampa Nag, Consultant of Caritas, a grassroots level development and social organisation, said, "Vector-borne diseases like malaria, dengue, chikungunya, etc. remain public health threats in India. It is worrying to see an increasing trend in dengue cases and deaths in recent years with 1.9 lakh cases and 325 deaths in 2017. Whilst India has shown significant decline in malaria cases and deaths in recent years, yet around 1lakh cases and 300 deaths have been reported in 2016. Due to continuing threats of mosquito-borne diseases, people in urban and rural areas look for quick and affordable solutions to protect themselves. That is when spurious and illegal players emerge, manufacturing and selling all kinds of mosquito repellents including incense sticks (agarbattis), which at times even have toxic ingredients like pesticides and other harmful chemicals. While it is essential to be protected from mosquito bites and possible dreadful diseases, it is sensible to use only government approved formulations & products. Information on appropriate personal protection measures should be widely & persistently promoted, amongst other strategies."

In recent times, prevalence of illegal agarbattis claiming mosquito repellent properties has gone up across India including Hyderabad. Acknowledging the spread and adverse health impact of spurious agarbattis that are laced with unregulated ingredients, authorities and industry associations have initiated action and, in recent times, raided and closed a facility in Hyderabad that manufactured various brands of harmful agarbattis.

Mr. Jayant Deshpande, Secretary and Director, Home Insecticide Control Association (HICA), a reputed organization of the domestic home insecticides sector, said, "There is a need to create awareness amongst consumers about unregulated agarbattis in the market. Products from unscrupulous players do not go through the regulated manufacturing processes and basic checks on safety parameters of skin, eye and respiratory system which is mandated for all home insecticide products. All illegal agarbattis flout norms and are not tested on the aforementioned parameters. Any usage of these illegal agarbattis is highly risky for citizens across age groups."

"Increased usage of illegal agarbattis or incense with unknown combustible material can trigger asthma, bronchitis, reactive airways disease and other respiratory ailments. It is time people across India take note of this serious issue to ensure safety of their families. Indoor air pollution can trigger worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease especially among women." added, Dr. Sai Praveen Haranath, Senior Pulmonologist and Critical Care Physician at Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad.
